Tips For CV Writing

It is important to spend time on getting your CV accurate. This is the basis on which prospective employers gauge whether or not candidates are suitable for interview and ultimately offer them a position.

Your CV should be a maximum of 2 pages; it should be concise and have no typing errors - so be sure to use a spellchecker and if possible ask somebody to proof read it for you! Use simple language and try to describe your relevant work experience with words that show how enthusiastic you are for the subject.

It is advisable to change your CV accordingly to suit the position for which you are applying for. You can do this by emphasising any skills or qualifications you possess that are required for the position.

Structure your CV in the following format:

  • Personal Details:

    Name
    Date of Birth
    Address
    Telephone Number
    Mobile Number
    Email Address
  • Personal Profile (optional)

A paragraph which highlights your key skills, experience and achievement

  • Academic Qualifications:

    GCSE's
    A/AS Levels
    HNC/HND
    Degree etc…
  • Vocational Qualifications:

    i.e. Fork Lift Licence
  • Career History:

Always start with your most recent position and work backwards
Include the company name/position held along with dates
State your key responsibilities in a brief summary or by using bullet points
  • Major Achievements:

Any voluntary work or highlights of 'your career'
  • Interests:

List any hobbies, groups you belong to etc
  • References:

Supply names and contact details of two referees. Ideally, these should be professional references from previous employees or you can use a personal reference from somebody who knows you and holds a responsible position
Alternatively state 'references available on request
